Hujeta Gar / Gar Rocket (Ctenolucius hujeta)

The Hujeta Gar, often called the Gar Rocket, is a sleek and fascinating freshwater predator known for its long, torpedo-shaped body and sharp, elongated snout. With its shimmering silver coloration and subtle markings, this fish brings a unique, prehistoric look to any aquarium.

Despite its predatory nature, it can be kept in community setups with properly sized tank mates and is best suited for aquarists with some experience.

Diet & Feeding

Hujeta Gars are carnivorous surface predators.

Staple Foods:

  • Carnivore pellets (if trained)

Protein / Foods:

  • Frozen silversides
  • Frozen shrimp
  • Frozen bloodworms (juveniles)
  • Live foods (feeder fish, insects)

Feeding Tips:

  • Feed once daily or every other day
  • Prefers floating or mid-water foods
  • May need live food initially before accepting frozen or pellets

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Semi-aggressive and predatory
  • Generally peaceful with larger fish
  • Will eat smaller fish that fit in its mouth

Compatible Tank Mates:

  • Larger tetras
  • Silver dollars
  • Cichlids (non-aggressive)
  • Other medium to large fish

  • Small fish (will be eaten)
